Identifying the opportunities and barriers to the development of distance electronic education: the lived experience of virtual course students

The sudden and rapid spread of the coronavirus caused a disruption in education and face-to-face meetings in schools. E-learning appeared in most countries as an alternative way to continue educational programs, which has opportunities and obstacles for students. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of identifying the opportunities and barriers to the development of distance electronic education: the lived experience of virtual course students. In this research, the qualitative approach and interpretive phenomenological method strategies were used. The studied population includes ninth grade students of virtual courses in the 4th district of Mashhad, who are studying in the academic year of 2014-2015. According to the available targeted sampling method, from 2 schools, 7 students were selected as samples and interviews were conducted with them. Thematic coding was done to analyze the answers of the students regarding the opportunities and barriers to the development of distance electronic education. The results showed that receiving education at home; increasing responsibility; Increasing the speed of information transmission, promoting media literacy; flexibility in class start time and elimination of expensive traffic; Creativity; continuous access to online content; Ability to practice in a safe environment; diversity of a wide range of educational materials and promotion of independent learning; Familiarity with social networks such as Shad, Telegram, WhatsApp, etc. is one of the most important opportunities and increasing the feeling of laziness and boredom; increased fraud; learning loss; Deprivation of physical space; Lack of quick access and creating inequality in education opportunities; Unreasonable use; The lack of interaction and technical problems of information technology equipment and the illiteracy of some teachers have been the most important obstacles to the development of distance electronic education. Therefore, e-learning has significant obstacles that require investment in infrastructure and development of teaching skills to make students' learning satisfactory. The results can be used to inform organizational and educational practice in further developing online learning.
