Thesis:

A qualitative study of students' experiences of life skills training in school

Life skills education is an important component of students’ holistic development, and schools can play a significant role in providing opportunities for learning and applying these skills in everyday life. Despite the growing emphasis on life skills education in educational systems, understanding students’ experiences and perceptions of such education is particularly important for improving its effectiveness. The present study aimed to qualitatively explore students’ experiences of life skills education at school. This study employed a qualitative approach using thematic analysis. The participants were students who had experience participating in school-based life skills education programs and activities. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, and sampling continued until data saturation was achieved. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews and were analyzed through repeated reading, initial coding, categorization, and identification of major and minor themes. To enhance the credibility of the findings, the data and emerging interpretations were reviewed through researcher and peer examination and, where appropriate, participant feedback. The findings are expected to indicate that students’ experiences of life skills education encompass several dimensions, including self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy and interpersonal relationships, decision-making, problem-solving, critical thinking, and adaptation to social situations. Students’ perceptions of the way life skills are taught, the role of teachers, peer interactions, and the practical applicability of educational content are also expected to influence their experiences of life skills education. Understanding students’ lived experiences can help identify strengths and shortcomings in existing school-based life skills programs and provide a basis for designing more relevant and effective educational interventions that are responsive to students’ actual needs.
