The Impact of Sanctions on the Opening of Letters of Credit from the Perspective of Iranian Laws and International Trade Law

Documentary credits are an international financial clearance tools with a high efficiency which are defined as vital artery in international trade sector. Because, it makes the international trade environment safe for the dealing parties, that simply transfer their highest risks to banks through payment of commissions to them. Financial sanctions of the Security Council of the United Nations Organization, against Iranian Banks alongside with the United States and European Union unilateral sanctions are considered a challenge with Iranian Banking System. In the meantime, documentary credits that are preferred policy in international transaction payments, has been adversely affected as a result of the State Bank System confrontation with international sanctions and thus has replaced it gradually with method of foreign currency bill of exchange payment that is an obsolete and unsafe procedure in international trading. This research examines effects of the international sanctions on opening documentary credits in Iran.
