Title : The evidentiary value of fingerprints and DNA in Iranian criminal proceedings.
In modern criminal justice systems, scientific evidence, especially fingerprints and DNA, are recognized as the most important and reliable evidence in identifying defendants and proving crimes. Due to their objectivity, scientificity, and repeatability, this evidence has a special place in criminal proceedings. However, the evidentiary value of this evidence in the Iranian legal system is accompanied by challenges and ambiguities that require careful examination. The present study was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and using library, documentary, and judicial sources. The purpose of this study is the evidentiary value of fingerprints and DNA in Iranian criminal proceedings. The results showed that in the Iranian legal system, fingerprints and DNA are recognized as scientific evidence, but their probative value is not absolute and certain. This evidence, along with other evidence, can play an effective role in discovering the truth, but alone cannot be the basis for issuing a conviction. Given scientific advances and the need for efficient criminal justice, it is essential for the legislator to improve the status of scientific evidence by amending the laws and determine more precise criteria for assessing their probative value.
