The effect of foliar application of different sources of potassium on the yield of barley
To evaluate the effect of foliar application of different potassium sources on yield and yield components of barley, a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications was performed in Sabzevar. Factors studied include foliar application of different potassium sources at four levels of control, potassium nitrate, solo potash and mono-potassium phosphate that were foliar applied at tillering, stem elongation, tillering + stem elongation. The amount of potassium fertilizers used was 2 kg per hectare at each stage of foliar application. The barley used in this experiment was Valfajr cultivar. The results showed that foliar application of different potassium source significantly increased plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of reproductive tillers per plant, spike length, number of seeds per spike, seed weight, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index compared to non-foliar application conditions. Foliar application of potassium nitrate at concentration of 0.5% produced the highest plant height, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index which had a significant increase compared to solo potash and mono-potassium phosphate foliar application treatments. There were no significant difference between potassium nitrate, solo potash and mono-potassium phosphate foliar applications in relation to number of tillers per plant, number of reproductive tillers per plant, spike length, number of seeds per spike and seed weight. The effect of potassium foliar application time on all studied traits was significant, except for the number of tillers per plant, seed weight and harvest index. Two foliar applications of potassium at tillering + stem elongation produced the highest plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of reproductive tillers per plant, spike length and seed yield. The highest biological yield and number of seed per spike were obtained by potassium foliar application at stem elongation stage, which showed no significant difference with two foliar applications of potassium in tillering and stem elongation stages. According to the results of this study, foliar application of potassium nitrate at concentration of 0.5% in stem elongation stage is recommended to increasing seed yield and harvest index of barley.
