Emotion Transmission in Language Classrooms: A Study Of The Relationship Between Iranian EFL Teachers’ and Learners’ Classroom Enjoyment

The emotions of teachers are considered relevant not only for their own well-being but also for the functioning of classrooms. Enjoyment is one of the most relevant and frequently experienced discrete emotions for both teachers and students in classroom learning contexts. Based on theories of emotion transmission between interaction partners, the researcher proposes a reciprocal effects model linking teachers’ and students’ enjoyment in the class. The present study examined the association between EFL learners’ classroom enjoyment and EFL teacher’s emotions. This study found the best predictors of students’ views on EFL teacher’s emotion components including enjoyment, anxiety, anger, pride, shame and boredom. The results of the study showed the teachers’ emotions have a predictable role in students’ learning enjoyment. Among the emotions, enjoyment had a significant contribution to the students’ enjoyment. The implication of this findings is that the link between teachers’ emotion and cognition should be highly emphasized in our field of study. As the results of the study showed, the components of teachers’ emotions could predict EFL learners’ classroom enjoyment and this also contributes to the future success of the students. The study offers major practical implications for language teachers, language students and material developers. Another study can investigate the relationship between teachers’ emotions, teachers’ cognitions and students’ achievement.
