Effect of purple(portullaca olleeracea) extract on blood coagulation time

Coagulation disorders are diseases that affect many people, most notably hemophilia. Hemophilia is caused by a lack of blood coagulation factors, which is the cause of mutations in the coagulation factor genes. Hemophilia is more common in men than in women, and these patients suffer from blood clotting. Medicinal plants have always been considered in the treatment of blood coagulation diseases such as hemophilia. Polygonum bistorta is used in traditional medicine to treat many diseases. Polygonum bistorta root extract has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Polygonum bistorta extract on blood coagulation. For this purpose, an Polygonum bistorta plant was first prepared. The roots of the Polygonum bistorta were extracted by reflux method and three different concentrations of extract were prepared. The effect of extract concentrations on blood coagulation was investigated. For this purpose, three tests of prothrombin time (PT) and relative time of thromboplastin time (PTT) and clot time (CT) were used to evaluate the blood coagulation process. The plasma pool was used to perform prothrombin time and relative thromboplastin time, while the clot time test was performed with the blood of a healthy person with no history of coagulation-related disease. The results showed that all three concentrations of aqueous extract of Polygonum bistorta had effect on prothrombin time and decreased this time compared to control. The results of coagulation index of relative thromboplastin time also showed that the aqueous extract of Polygonum bistorta plant reduced the relative time of thromboplastin compared to control. The results of the clotting time (CT) test also showed that the aqueous extract of Polygonum bistorta plant reduced blood clotting time compared to the control sample. Based on the results of the effect of Polygonum bistorta on three blood coagulation tests, aqueous extract of Polygonum bistorta can be considered as a treatment option in hemophilia patients
